Stop everything: It looks like we’re getting a Grease prequel movie all about Danny and Sandy!

After nearly four decades, the Grease cinematic universe is expanding, and this time, we’re getting a prequel. John August is set to write a script for the aptly titled Summer Loving, which will recount Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson’s epic fling in the summer of ’59.
While the original 1978 film opens with Danny and Sandy’s tearful end-of-summer goodbye, most of their fling is retold through the song “Summer Nights” after the pair unexpectedly run into each other at Rydell High. Now, it seems we’ll finally see how that summer loving actually went down…and we have a feeling Danny’s problematic side of that story will (thankfully) not hold up.
And for those who don’t know, Summer Loving is the second spinoff based on the beloved musical. Michelle Pfeiffer starred in the grossly under-appreciated 1982 sequel, Grease 2. Most recently, Grease was given the live-action treatment with a televised staged production on Fox in 2016. Grease: Live starred Aaron Tveit as Danny, Julianne Hough as Sandy, Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy, and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo.
While no other details about the new movie—including a release date or casting—have been revealed just yet, we’re already wondering who our new Sandy and Danny will be. Surely current teen rom-com staples Noah Centineo and Luke Benward are in the mix, right?
Only time will tell.
