Turns out your grandparents may be way more hardcore about their coffee than you
You probably wouldn’t have believed it, but your grandma drinks more coffee than you. And we have the data to prove it. According to an annual study conducted by the National Coffee Association, 68 percent of those in the 60+ age group surveyed drink coffee every day. We’re talking black, and no cream or sugar. Oh, and no extra flavors necessary. Because they’re hardcore.
And when it comes to millennials, 50 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds make getting their daily dosage of caffeine a priority. And 60 percent of 25- to 39-year-olds surveyed are throwing back the beverage. Surprised? Don’t be. It actually makes a whole lot of sense. When explaining just why our parent’s parents are more obsessed with the drink than we are, NCA spokesman Joe DeRupo said, “For older people, it’s ingrained.”
When our grandparents were developing their caffeine addictions, they only had one option to choose from. And us? Well, along with gourmet coffee selections, we also have a slew of energy drinks at our disposal.
But overall, there’s been a decline in how much Americans consume coffee.
DeRupo also said that these days, coffee is “more of a treat and an event than something that’s part of your daily routine.” And that goes for both millennials and our grandparents.
And once gourmet coffees were singled out in the study, the younger generations are certainly leading the charge. Thirty-nine percent of 18- to 24-year-olds and 50 percent of 25- to 39-year-olds surveyed are reaching for the lattes and fraps, compared to 34 percent of 60+-year-olds surveyed.
Sure, granny may not be able to hold down that Jägerbomb like the rest of us young whippersnappers. But, when it comes to taking her coffee sans cream, sugar, and flavors? Don’t ever underestimate her ability to drink you under the table.
More data that proves our pop-pops and nanas are more hardcore than us, please!
