Say goodbye to unicorn toast — these four goth toast recipes are here to feed your dark soul

There is so much rainbow and unicorn food out there. Don’t get us wrong, we love a colorful rainbow recipe (see: this cheesy bread), but sometimes we need something a little darker in our bellies.

Unicorn toast became a trend last year and has somewhat overstayed its welcome — so we thought we would create something for the goth teen in all of us. This vegan goth toast recipe is a creative way to make art out of food, and you’ll find that gothic toast is just as Instagram friendly as its predecessor, if not more.

You can cut fresh strawberries into hearts displayed on a completely blackened spread or sprinkle a pop of color on your toast. Or try marbling black and white together and top it off with some blackberries. Finally, layer all the shades of gray onto your toast for a beautiful ombre. Better yet, mix and match these ideas to come up with something completely different (like your inner goth would). Just use the toast as your canvas and paint whatever your dark soul desires.

Ombre Goth Toast

8 Tbsp. vegan cream cheese (from 1 [8-oz.] container) (such as GO VEGGIE), divided
2 tsp. honey, divided
1 drop black liquid food coloring
3/4 tsp., plus 1/8 tsp., plus 1/16 tsp. Activated Coconut Charcoal Powder (from 1 [2.65-oz.] container), divided
1 (1 1/2-oz.) sprouted grain sandwich bread slice, toasted
1/4 tsp. edible gold flakes

1. Place 2 tablespoons of the cream cheese into each of 4 small bowls. Add 1/2 teaspoon of honey to each bowl. Add food coloring and 1/2 teaspoon of the charcoal powder to 1 of the bowls, and stir to blend. Add 1/4 teaspoon of the charcoal powder to second bowl, and stir to blend. Add 1/8 teaspoon of the charcoal powder into third bowl, and stir to blend. Add remaining 1/16 teaspoon charcoal powder into remaining fourth bowl, and stir to blend. Each bowl will be a different shade of grey (from darkest to lightest).

2. From darkest to lightest, spoon 1 tablespoon of the of the cream cheese mixture on top of toast. Save remaining cream cheese for another use. Using a small offset spatula, spread each shade of cream cheese evenly across toast. Wipe spatual clean with paper towels between shades. Gently spread edges of colors together until colors begin to blend, creating an ombre effect. Sprinkle 1 corner of toast with gold flakes. Serve immediately.
