Apparently “Gossip Girl” once had to cut a scene featuring sex toys
Hot on the well-polished designer heels of the show’s 10th anniversary, members of the cast and crew of Gossip Girl are sharing stories about what never made it to air, and some of the memories and anecdotes might surprise you. For example, the show’s co-creators recently revealed that Gossip Girl cut a scene that involved sex toys, and we’re actually kinda bummed.
Of course, it’s important to remember that at the time, Gossip Girl was considered pretty risqué for a teen show. In fact, parents were often outraged at the series for its sexy antics and ad campaigns. But it seems that there were some plot lines just too racy to make it to air.
In a new interview with Vulture, Gossip Girl co-creators Stephanie Savage, Josh Schwartz, and executive producer Joshua Safran revealed the one major scene that got left on the cutting room floor, and it involves…a lot of dildos. Yes, really.
It seems Georgina Sparks (played by Michelle Trachtenberg) was tormenting her nemesis Serena van der Woodsen from afar, and sends her a box of rubber penises (as one does).
"There were dildos she sent to Dan at the house, and we had these really huge dildos in this house that Penn [Badgley, who played Dan] was so shocked to see — but we cut it because you couldn’t show them on air," Safran said in the Vulture interview. The deleted-scene version, which I don’t think we ever put anywhere, is hilarious because they’re like a foot and a half long. Penn was really shocked."
While we’re not surprised that this particular detail never made it to our TV screens, we’re so thankful that the Gossip Girl creators are opening up about the scenes that were considered taboo at the time.
Any other scandalous moments that got cut? Do tell.
