Google’s epic April Fool’s Day joke totally backfired in the worst way
April Fool’s Day is all fun and games until it’s… well… not. Google learned that the hard way today. The epic joke they played was a litttttttle too believable. So much so that it reportedly even got some people fired.
Last night, Google introduced Mic Drop:
“Email’s great, but sometimes you just wanna hit the eject button,” Google explained. “Like those heated threads at work, when everyone’s wrong except you (obviously). Or those times when someone’s seeking group approval, but your opinion is the only one that matters (amirite?). Or maybe you just nailed it, and there’s nothing more to say (bam).
Today, Gmail is making it easier to have the last word on any email with Mic Drop. Simply reply to any email using the new ‘Send + Mic Drop’ button. Everyone will get your message, but that’s the last you’ll ever hear about it. Yes, even if folks try to respond, you won’t see it.”
Sounds like it could be pretty funny, right? But only if you’re sending an email to your friends, probably.
“When you drop the mic, your email will also include an explanatory image–just to help set expectations,” Google added.
And that image? A Minion literally dropping a mic.
But here’s the problem — not everyone got the memo, and they accidentally hit the Mic Drop button instead of the Send button when sending emails to their bosses, business associates, potential employers, etc.
Yeah. Whoopsie.
Needless to say, those people aren’t too happy with Google right now:
Google recognized the prank was a big mistake, so they’ve already issued an apology.
“UPDATE: Well, it looks like we pranked ourselves this year,” Google wrote. “Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We’re truly sorry. The feature has been turned off. If you are still seeing it, please reload your Gmail page.”
So that’s that. No more Mic Drop. No more accidental Minion memes. But there will no doubt be plenty more April Fool’s Day jokes to go around today. Be safe out there, you guys.
