Google’s job search engine is adding salary estimates, and it will change the way you job search
If you’ve ever conducted a job search (we’re talking to pretty much everyone here), you know how strange talking about money can be. Today’s job culture disapproves of discussing salary up front, so many times we’re left in the dark about how much a company is willing to offer for the role. But not anymore, thanks to Google’s job search engine. Google Jobs is adding a salary estimator, and it’s going to change everything.
Google Jobs, which was introduced earlier this year, will now have a salary estimator, among other game-changing settings. Hopefully, this might help alleviate Google’s own massive gender pay gap.
For jobs with published salary info, the compensation figures will appear right next to the job listings. For those that do not (which right now, unfortunately, is most jobs), Google will cull salary ranges from sites like Glassdoor and Payscale to help give you a better idea of what you could potentially make. Transparency is a huge step in negotiating more competitive salaries.
Sounds pretty cool, right? But there are even more features that will have you using Google Jobs if you aren’t already. You can now filter jobs by how far away they are from you — within a range of 2 to 200 miles. Also, within the next few weeks, you’ll be able to save jobs postings with a bookmark. Google will compile them into a tab that you can access them later, from any device. And finally, the new interface will allow you to choose which job board site (Monster, Indeed, etc.) you can click through and apply with.
These updates are certain to seriously upgrade your job search game — and help level the playing field.
Happy applying! And may the salary odds be ever in your favor.
