Google will be delivering your groceries any minute now

Not a fan of grocery shopping? Well, for residents of San Francisco and another, as yet unnamed city, Google will soon be happy to handle that pesky errand for you. The web giant is testing out a fresh food delivery service, looking to get in on the $10.9 billion online grocery industry.

There aren’t too many details about the program yet, although it comes on the heels of expansion of Google’s same-day delivery service. The company also announced that a possible 25 million customers will soon have the option available in the Midwest. Although dry groceries are included in the delivery system that Google has now, this new program will include fresh foods from Whole Foods and Costco.

“For a lot of our merchants that have been successful with this, we’re not representing the whole store today,” Google Express general manager Brian Elliott told Bloomberg. “It’s in our incentive, as well as the merchant’s incentive, for us to help customers get the full store delivered to them.”

Services offering grocery delivery have grown significantly in the past few years, and the growth is expected to be steady at 9.6% per year through 2019. Amazon has already gotten in on the game with AmazonFresh, but other startups like Instacart, Peapod, and local operations are also carving out places for themselves. The appeal is pretty easy to see, especially for those who don’t necessarily have the time to wait in the checkout line after work. What could be easier than ordering your groceries online and having them brought straight to your door?

The trial roll-out is expected to take place later this year. Hope that mystery city is ours!
