Goldie Hawn to Kate Hudson: Forget Men! Focus on Your Besties
You’ve probably heard some version of the phrase “boys come and go but friends are forever” many times before. It’s not the most helpful thing to hear when you’re young and still figuring things out, but if you’ve had a full, interesting life and find yourself championing this adage, you know it’s absolutely true.
Kate Hudson, who got married at 21 and has had several high-profile paramours, wholeheartedly stands by this philosophy. Speaking to SELF magazine, Hudson credits her celebrity mother Goldie Hawn for encouraging good values and strong female bonds, “My mom once said something so poignant to me: ‘Honor your female friendships, because men can come and go, but when we nurture our relationships with women, they can be forever.’ I really believe that. My girlfriends are so important to me. They’ve been my rock-solid foundation.”
Hudson, who’s been engaged to Muse singer Matt Bellamy for three years, adds that love is no walk in the park, “Relationships are the most challenging things. It’s where you do the most work in your life. You come face-to-face with yourself, and if you can deal with realizing we’re all flawed, accept it and work with it, you might have a really amazing, lasting relationship.”
Romantic love isn’t enough all the time though, and Hudson seems to have learned that after marrying and becoming a mother very young, dating in the public eye and being prodded on when she and Bellamy will finally walk down the aisle. Perhaps that’s what groomed Hudson into a stand up friend, which the media recognized last year when Glee star Lea Michele praised Hudson following the shocking death of boyfriend Cory Monteith.
Hudson and Michele worked together on season four of the popular Fox comedy, and though various news outlets claimed the women clashed on set, the poised actresses shot down the rumors and said they’d had a great time on the show. Michele said Hudson was a big help after Monteith passed away and tabloids tried to hunt the grieving brunette down for comment on the worst tragedy of her life.
“I called [Hudson] and said, I don’t know where I’m going to go because my house is swarmed [with reporters],” Michele divulged to ELLE last fall. “She was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to stay at my house.’ Like it was nothing. She let my family stay there, and any of my friends. She made sure that in the refrigerator were my favorite juices … I’ll never really be able to thank her, truly, for what she did for me.”
Hudson may be older and in more of a position to help out a pal in trouble, but I bet Michele would return the favor for the enchanting Glee guest star.
Katy Perry is close with Hudson too. As you may already know, Katy Perry’s birth name is Katy Hudson, and the musical sensation took on a different stage name due to Kate Hudson’s popularity. They hang out a lot, but unlike some Hollywood types, this pair keeps it low key.
“We stopped going to clubs and we started staying home and having game nights, which is really fun,” Perry told Us magazine. “And she is super cool, she is gorgeous, to die for.”
Hudson’s got a solid group of women to lean on, but this article would be incomplete without mention of her How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fools Gold castmate Matthew McConaughey. Regardless of your thoughts on the movies and rom-coms in general, the chemistry between these two is undeniable, and the Best Actor winner has addressed it before. In an old interview with Glamour, he said of their rapport, “We work well and we fight well.”
Hudson acknowledged he was correct and continued, “I’ve seen you brush your teeth in the morning. I know what your body odor smells like. I can smell you from five blocks away. I know all your different style kisses. And I know all your different style hugs. If I were walking down a street and some guy came up and slapped my ass, if it were you, I would know it was you.”
McConaughey couldn’t help topping that remark, “Well you know what? If I were blindfolded and told to walk over and slap 10 asses, I would know which one was your ass.”
This is a lot of rear end talk for a post about friendship, but if anyone can get your butt in gear again, it’s a BFF, and that counts for much more than romance sometimes.
