Golden Globes Predictions: Here’s who we think will take home the top awards this weekend

This weekend kicks off awards season! And Jimmy Fallon will host 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards this Sunday. This year, there are so many amazing films nominated for awards. From small, elegant dramas, to graceful musicals, to Spandex-wearing superheroes, there’s something for everyone in the Golden Globes nominations this year. But only one can win in each category, so we took a guess at who we thought would take home top awards. Here are our picks for some of the top film awards at this year’s Golden Globes.

Best Motion Picture — Drama

NOMINEES:
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

Our Pick: Moonlight

Moonlight is a stunning, emotional movie, and we think it could definitely take home the prize. The film’s unusual storytelling style makes it stand out even more. Plus, newcomer Travante Rhodes turns in a totally stunning performance that’s definitely award quality.

Best Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical

NOMINEES:
20th Century Women
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
La La Land
Sing Street

Our Pick: La La Land

The stunning musical spectacular that is La La Land seems almost assured to win in this category. And with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling showing off a little Old-Hollywood flair with their dancing styles, we’re glad its chances are so good. La La Land combines the fun and whimsy of the Musical/Comedy category with deft storytelling and gorgeous cinematography, so this one will be tough to beat.

Best Actress — Drama

NOMINEES:
Amy Adams, Arrival
Jessica Chastain, Miss Sloane
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Ruth Negga, Loving
Natalie Portman, Jackie

Our Pick: Natalie Portman

While she is in a category with some VERY talented ladies, we think Natalie will take this one. Natalie’s vulnerable and smart portrayal of Jackie Kennedy shortly after her husband’s assassination is so captivating, we can’t imagine her going home empty-handed.

Best Actress — Comedy or Musical

NOMINEES:
Annette Bening, 20th Century Women
Lily Collins, Rules Don’t Apply
Hailee Steinfeld, The Edge of Seventeen
Emma Stone, La La Land
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins

Our Pick: Meryl Streep

This pick is a bit controversial, because most have assumed that Emma Stone will take home this award. And while both ladies turn in fabulous performances, we think the numbers are on our side. Meryl has won eight Golden Globe Awards, so we think she scores a bit of an upset this year.

Best Actor — Drama

NOMINEES:
Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington, Fences
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Joel Edgerton, Loving
Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea

Our Pick: Denzel Washington

Denzel turned in an all-star performance in Fences with Viola Davis, so we think he’ll win this. Plus, the Golden Globes love to award big name talent, and when it comes towards, the names don’t get much bigger than Denzel. While Denzel does face very stiff competition, this year, we think he’ll take home the Golden Globe.

Best Actor — Comedy or Musical

NOMINEES:
Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool
Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Colin Farrell, The Lobster
Jonah Hill, War Dogs

Our Pick: Ryan Gosling

This category feels like it’s a battle between the Ryans, but even though we love Deadpool, we think Ryan Gosling will take home the prize for La La Land. The Hollywood-set musical feels more like an award performance, and big-budget superhero movies don’t tend to score as many wins. Although, we could be proven wrong. Regardless, we think a Ryan takes a Golden Globe home this year.

Don’t forget to watch the 74th Annual Golden Globes this Sunday on NBC to see if we were right!
