Here’s how the Internet is responding to the Golden Globes mixing up America Ferrera and Gina Rodriguez
The Golden Globe nominees were announced this morning, and people are talking. But rather than freak out about all the rad, lady-driven films and TV faves like Game of Thrones and Orange is the New Black that received nods this year, the Internet instead has a bone to pick about a big, Golden Globes mix-up.
Along with the announcements, the official Golden Globe Awards Twitter account posted, “@HereIsGina kicking off the @goldenglobes nominations announcements #GoldenGlobes” — along with a photo of America Ferrera, not Gina Rodriguez, standing at the podium. You know, a totally different human woman. (Eeek!)
And the Golden Globes Twitter handle didn’t make the mistake once. They made it twice.
To make it clear, America Ferrera stars in the TV show Superstore, andGina Rodriguez plays the title character in Jane the Virgin. The only similarity between these women is that they are both Latina actresses, and both already Golden Globe winners. The Twitter account took down the post pretty quickly, and according to Deadline, the Hollywood Foreign Press stated, “What occurred this morning was an unfortunate error. Our sincerest apologies to America and Gina.” The Internet has been…Not so forgiving.
Like this Twitter user, who was not afraid to bust out their “Smh”
Or this tweet, which is just flabbergasted.
This tweet would like to point out Gina and America look nothing alike, C’MON GUYS.
David would like to put it out there that The Golden Globes made TWO mistakes this morning. Oy.
And this citizen of Twitter sums the whole thing up perfectly.
It’s safe to say we all learned a valuable lesson from this: When you’re announcing who’s announcing nominees for an awards show, maaaaaybe do your homework.
After all is said and done, let’s not forget that today’s focus shouldn’t be on how much the actresses do or don’t look alike, but instead on all of their many, incredible accomplishments. In particular, we’re still SO PROUD of Gina Rodriguez’s Best Actress nom for her role in Jane the Virgin this year. You go, girl.
