Go Topless Day is a thing, and it happened this past weekend

In case you missed it, Go Topless Day is a thing, and it’s super interesting. The more you learn about it, the more interesting it gets, because it isn’t just about everyone showing off their boobs in the name of sexuality, or even feminism — but it’s a part of a larger movement about equality.

Go Topless Day was inspired by Women’s Equality Day.

Always scheduled on the Sunday closest to Women’s Equality Day, the movement has roots in the women’s rights movement. The movement believes that women shouldn’t have to hide their bodies if men don’t, which clearly makes sense, considering that breasts aren’t actually as hypersexual as our ~wonderfully sexist~ society would have us think.

Go Topless Day is about equality.

“As long as men are allowed to be topless in public, women should have the same constitutional right. Or else, men should have to wear something to hide their chests” Rael, founder of GoTopless.org and spiritual leader of the Raelian Movement, explained on the site.

Hundreds of people participated, and it garnered lots of attention!

And it’s more than a one-day thing.

According to the site, it’s a “U.S.-based organization founded in 2007 by spiritual leader Rael and we claim that women have the same constitutional right that men have to go bare-chested in public.”

Pretty cool, right?

We’re definitely intrigued, and are sure to spend a good portion of our day doing some deep internet research on this one (after all, feminism is regularly co-opted to do everything from sell products to push political agendas, so it’s best to make sure you’re actually on board with what a movement does before buying in).

Either way, our interest has been piqued. And we’re definitely down to learn more.
