Gmail just added a new feature that could make our breakups a little easier
Breakups can be hard, and they don’t always bring out the best in people. And if you’re going through a breakup, all it takes is one ill-timed email (or worse, one ill-timed and mean email) to make the whole thing so much worse. But Google is looking out for us, with a new “block sender” feature that will make it much easier to avoid unwanted emails.
As any Gmail user knows, until now the best you could do was mark an email as spam and hope the sender is filtered away from your inbox. But it’s not always reliable, making it less than ideal if you’re trying to avoid emails. Yesterday, however, Google announced their latest upgrade, which allows users to block senders completely.
“Sometimes you get mail from someone who’s really disruptive,” Google Product Manager Sri Harsha Somanchi wrote in a blog post. “Hopefully it doesn’t happen often — but when it does, you should be able to say, ‘Never see messages from this person again.’”
Yes, the feature can be used to get rid of newsletters and annoying sales emails, but it’s also going to do wonders for those who receive unwanted messages from people who make them feel crushed, heartbroken, or worse, unsafe. With online harassment such a huge issue, a move like this could go a long way in making sure people are able to properly care for themselves by avoiding trolls, be they of the anonymous web variety or the ex who just won’t go away variety.
The feature is available now on web, and will be available for Android devices next week. To use it, look under the “More” button in an email. An option will pop up to block the sender’s email address, which will send all messages from them to spam. It can be undone, but that’ll all depend on what happens between you and your ex.
