“Glamour’s” Women of the Year honorees have been announced — and there’s a twist

Every day is a great day to celebrate girl power, but even more so when Glamour announces their Women of the Year honorees. Packed with strong women and superstars alike, Glamour’s 2016 Women of the Year list also includes an unprecedented twist. For the past 27 years, Glamour’s Women of the Year winners have served as a who’s who in the world, from the pop culture zeitgeist to leaders of social change. This year’s list is no different; it includes Gwen Stefani, the founders of #BlackLivesMatter, and Simone Biles. However, rounding up this year’ list is an interesting addition: a man.

For the first time since its inception, Glamour’s annual edition of female awesomeness includes the legendary Bono. Why include a male honoree on a list that explicitly acknowledges women? According to Glamour, the answer is simple. “When a major male rock star who could do anything at all with his life decides to focus on the rights of women and girls worldwide — well, all that’s worth celebrating.”

As for the women being honored this year (the most important part), the complete list includes the three women who founded the #BlackLivesMatter movement — Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi.

In addition, Glamour is honoring the Stanford sexual assault case survivor “Emily Doe” and body positive activist Ashley Graham. Superstars Gwen Stefani and Zendaya, Olympian Simone Biles, and changemakers Christine Lagarde, Nadia Murad, and Miuccia Prada round out the list. Actress Tracee Ellis Ross will honor the nominees on November 14th in Los Angeles, but until then you can admire the stunning photos of Glamour’s 2016 honorees.

As always, Glamour’s Women of the Year are impressive, inspiring, and worthy of this accolade. We’re still not sure how we feel about a man being included on Glamour’s list of Women of the Year, but hey, at least it’s Bono.
