Giving Tuesday Now is tomorrow—here’s how you can get involved
Typically, Giving Tuesday occurs around the holidays—right in that sweet spot after Black Friday and Cyber Monday and just a few weeks before Christmas. But because 2020 has proven to be anything but typical, another date for Giving Tuesday has been added to the calendar: May 5th. As an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by coronavirus (COVID-19), Giving Tuesday Now will encourage communities to give back to the organizations and individuals they love most.
What is Giving Tuesday all about?
The original Giving Tuesday launched eight years ago when New York’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together with the goal of setting aside one day a year to celebrate the generosity of giving. It was created as a charitable answer to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are some of the biggest retail shopping days. Now, its mission has transformed into changing how people think about, talk about, and participate in giving all year round.
Coronavirus has caused hardship for so many people. Many are unemployed or furloughed, small businesses are struggling, and healthcare professionals are vulnerable on the front lines. So, the organization is once again asking for a special day of giving. Giving Tuesday Now will be a global day of unity to help those that need it most.
What can you do to give back on Giving Tuesday Now?
According to the organization’s website, there are several ways you can get involved:
- Support healthcare workers by donating supplies, advocating for them, and staying home.
- Give to the organizations that you love most. Nonprofits need our support, and no amount is too little.
- Help out small businesses by buying gift cards or writing an online review.
- Combat loneliness by reaching out to a neighbor, a relative, seniors, or veterans.
We all could use a little love right now. Wouldn't it be amazing to see a sea of hearts in windows in your community on May 5th? Print the #GivingTuesdayNow rainbow heart sign, snap a picture, + share on social! Let's create a wave of love! https://t.co/WAGOxzcQLQ pic.twitter.com/J71SrNsVrn
