Here’s what Idina Menzel has to say about #GiveElsaAGirlfriend

When it comes to the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign, Frozen fans just can’t seem to let it go, and for really good reason. If you hadn’t heard about the viral hashtag, it was started by writer Alexis Isabel Moncada, who pointed out how groundbreaking it would be if Disney chose to make one of the most popular modern Disney queens a true icon for the LGBTQ community in the film’s sequel. And now, Idina Menzel — voice of Elsa — is officially on board with the idea.

On the red carpet at the Las Vegas’ Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, Idina spoke to ET about the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign — namely, that she’s in support! “I think it’s great. Disney’s just gotta contend with that,” she said. “I’ll let them figure it out.”

And if Disney ended up listening to fans’ request, Idina says she would be all for it, “no matter what,” because Elsa “changed my life.” false false

“The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees,” the hashtag’s creator explained in an article for MTV.com. “But we’ve never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship. . . Many in the LGBT community view Frozen as a metaphor for the experience of coming out and accepting who you are. Yet Elsa, the film’s protagonist, will probably end up with a male prince or king in the upcoming Frozen sequel.”

Excellent points, and we’ve even got Idina on board. Come on, Disney — #GiveElsaAGirlfriend!
