We need this: Girls dance to Beyoncé’s “Freedom” to celebrate International Day of the Girl

We don’t need any reminding that girls are fierce, but it never hurts to have confirmation of what we already know. And that’s exactly what the #FreedomForGirls campaign has provided with its video of girls dancing to Beyoncé’s “Freedom,” as Glamour reported. The video was made to promote the U.N.’s Global Goals most relevant to gender equality in honor of the International Day of the Girl on October 11th, 2017. Along with it being an amazing showcase of girls’ talents, the Freedom for Girls campaign provides resources on how to achieve the Global Goals by helping with things like stopping violence against girls, getting girls in school, and ending child marriage by 2030.
Beyoncé provides the soundtrack and the video is a partnership through the organizations Project Everyone, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Female filmmaker MJ Delaney directed this #FreedomForGirls video, as well as another video last year for the Global Goals to the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe,” but told Glamour that this year:
"A lot has happened globally, and I wanted to do something defiant and angry and demanding."
And defiant definitely comes to mind while watching these girls express themselves through the magic and power of Beyoncé.

The girls dancing and lip syncing like mini Beyoncés is epic, but, as Delaney mentioned, there’s a serious message about gender inequality in the video released for the Day of the Girl. The following shocking and saddening facts are provided on-screen to bring you back to reality:
“Every five minutes a girl dies as a result of violence.”
“One in four girls gets married as a child.”
“71% of human trafficking victims are female.”
“63 million girls have undergone female genital mutilation.”
“130 million girls are out of school.”
“Girls are twice as likely to become infected with HIV.”
With the takeaway message being:
“Girls around the world are fighting for their freedom every day.”

The Global Goals initiative is asking people on this Day of the Girl 2017 to share the movie and say what #FreedomForGirls means to you. And we encourage you to take it one step further for girls worldwide by checking out how else you can achieve the Global Goals on their Day of the Girl website. Because we all deserve the freedom Beyoncé sings about on this and every day.
