The ‘Girls’ character you never thought would return is making a comeback

Exciting possible news from the set of Girls! Season five is currently being shot, and of course we’re loving any glimpses at what’s to come for the ladies. But one familiar face popped up on set recently, that we’re particularly surprised to see. Charlie, Marnie’s long-time boyfriend, has been spotted!

In case you’ve forgotten, Chris Abbott left the show after Season 2, citing other projects and feeling unable to relate to his character.

“The world that Lena [Dunham, the creator] wrote was very real, especially in New York,” Abbott told The New York Times. “But it wasn’t as relatable for me on a personal level. It’s not that I only like to play roles I know to a T, but there’s something satisfying about playing parts where you really relate to the characters.”

Abbott went off to star in some plays, while rumors swirled that there was some, well, bad blood between him and his boss, Lena Dunham (aka coolest boss ever.)

Obviously things are pretty chill with everyone now—take that rumors!

The Daily Mail justpublished some promising photos of Abbott and Allison Williams on set of the new season. Could Charlie be returning for a season 5 cameo? It looks like it.

Of course, there’s no way of knowing if Abbott just stopped to say ‘hi’ or was actually filming for the next season. And there’s no way of knowing how he’d fit into the story, which is taking place after a time jump. Marnie, who we last saw rocking a solo showcase after Desi bailed on her, is in a very different place than she was last time we saw Charlie.

Although a rekindling of their relationship feels pretty far off and kind of a few steps backward in her character development, we would love to see these two old flames connecting after all this time, even if it’s just for a quick check-in with good-old Charlie.

Also, he can’t stay away from Marnie. I mean, remember this?
