I Hate Wearing Thongs—Except for These Eco-Friendly Ones
Girlfriend Collective's thongs are the only ones that don't feel like a perpetual wedgie.
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who swear by thongs and those, like me, who’d rather go commando than have to deal with the feeling of a perpetual wedgie. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried to understand why some people love thongs. I’ve invested in lace pairs, cotton pairs, and string pairs in the hopes that their no-show backside would be worth the discomfort I felt. However, each time I tried wearing a thong I found that my favorite part was taking them off. I only became a thong believer after Girlfriend Collective launched a line of sustainably made socks and underwear—including its mid-rise thong.
When my pairs arrived, the first thing I noticed was their high quality. I had previously tried other types of seamless underwear, only to have them either stretch out on me after just a few washes/wears or rip extremely easily—which is not something I’m looking for in my underwear, thank you very much. Similar to Girlfriend Collective’s beloved leggings, these soft and stretchy thongs are made from recycled plastic bottles and are decidedly sturdy. Plus, 100% of the proceeds from the launch were donated to The Loveland Foundation, The Okra Project, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, so it was the kind of purchase I felt good about making.
They feel like a second skin: The material molds to the curves of my body, and the wide sidebands don’t roll down or dig into my hips. Because of this, the thongs are exceptionally smooth, and whether they’re under a white sundress, leggings, biker shorts, or a body-con skirt, there are no visible panty lines. Also, the lightweight material is nice and breathable, so they stand up throughout at-home workout sessions or extra-hot days, keeping you nice and dry.
But perhaps the best part is that the back is both wide enough and soft enough that I don’t feel like I have a perpetual wedgie throughout the day. I think the best kind of underwear feel like you’re not wearing any at all, and I’m happy to say that Girlfriend Collective’s thongs make that a reality.
Since Girlfriend Collective’s underwear has converted me to a thong wearer, I’m definitely going to invest in a few more pairs. They’re available in sizes XXS to 6XL and are recyclable through Girlfriend’s take-back program, ReGirlfriend, which, in partnership with Unifi, will take back old Girlfriend Collective socks and underwear to recycle them into new pairs.
