Gina Rodriguez is super pumped about the first Latina Disney princess
Last year, when it was announced that there would soon be a Latina Disney princess, it’s safe to say that we majorly freaked out. After all, Elena of Avalor will be Disney’s very first hispanic princess who’s described as a “bold, caring, funny and clever ascendant to the throne in the fairytale kingdom of Avalor.” Plus, her Disney Channel show is set to beautifully celebrate Latin culture and folklore. Even Jane the Virgin actress Gina Rodriguez is pumped about this progress in the magical world of Disney.
Just a few hours ago, Gina posted a photo of 16-year-old Princess Elena and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about this project. “#MovementMondays Elena of Avalor, the first Latina Disney Princess,” wrote Rodriguez. “I have so many incredible friends who have been a part of this project and together we can make sure it has a long lasting life on screen!”
She made sure to credit Aimee Carrero (who stars on Young and Hungry and voices Elena); Jenna Ortega (who plays young Jane on Jane the Virgin and voices Elena’s little sister Princess Isabel); Jorge Diaz (who starred on Jane the Virgin and plays Elena’s friend Gabe); Jaime Camil (who plays Rodriguez’s father on Jane the Virgin and will voice an unannounced Elena of Avalor character); and Ivonne Coll (who plays Gina’s grandmother on Jane the Virgin and will also be voicing a surprise character).
“Very excited for this project!” continued Gina. “And feeling really blessed the Latino community has a princess for our little ladies all over the globe! (A fierce, strong and intelligent princess ?)”
Not only did Gina take a moment to gush about Princess Elena – she also revealed that the Disney Channel show will be premiering this summer. With a team of cultural advisors helping Disney create the series, we have a feeling that Gina’s right to be excited. Luckily, her enthusiasm is contagious and she’s making us want to meet Princess Elena even more than we did before.
