Gina Rodriguez opened up about living with anxiety

Gina Rodriguez — the 32-year old star of The CW’s Jane the Virgin — may look like she’s totally comfortable in front of the camera. But yesterday, she revealed that isn’t always the case.

In a candid Instagram caption, Gina opened up about the anxiety she felt while being filmed without makeup or professional styling.

The caption appeared under a video made by Anton Soggiu, a photographer living in Norway, who is working on an art series of 10-second portraits.

"It's always great to be in front of [Anton's] lens but this time it was just me. Bare and exposed in the streets of LA. No makeup. No styling. Just me," Gina wrote in the Instagram caption. "I suffer from anxiety. And watching this clip I could see how anxious I was but I empathize with myself. I wanted to protect her and tell her it's OK to be anxious, there is nothing different or strange about having anxiety and I will prevail. I like watching this video. It makes me uncomfortable but there is a freedom I feel maybe even an acceptance. This is me. Puro Gina."

Gina isn’t the first celebrity to publicly open up about anxiety recently. Just this spring, Ellie Goulding revealed that she was able to overcome her anxiety attacks through boxing. Emma Stone also revealed her history with the mental health issue in a campaign video for the nonprofit Child Mind Institute. Finally, Game of Thrones‘s Lena Headey has also been vocal about her own anxiety on Twitter.

When public figures talk about anxiety and other health concerns, it helps to combat the mental health stigma that is associated with many of these very common diagnoses.

We’re so proud of Gina for stepping up and being one of the celebrities talking about mental health issues publicly!
