Meet ‘Gilmore Guys,’ your new favorite podcast
When you have a favorite podcast, the day of the week new episodes drop quickly becomes your absolute favorite day. I am not at all ashamed to say I planned my Thursday mornings around new episodes of Serial, because it was just that good. If you’re looking for another podcast to get hooked on, allow me introduce you to Gilmore Guys.
That’s right, there’s a podcast dedicated to all things Gilmore — as hashed out by two male Gilmore watchers. We’ve been fans of these guys for a while now, and we think you’ll love them too. The show’s hosts and creators, Kevin Porter and Demi Adejuyigbe, are two men going through the series episode by episode, providing thoughtful and insightful analyses of each. Porter, the seasoned Gilmore fan and Adejuyigbe, the Stars Hollow newbie, release new episodes of Gilmore Guys every Monday and Wednesday. They cover everything from plot points, to wild pop culture references, to recurring themes. And generally, it’s pretty positive. But it’s not all Chow Chows and risotto.
Naturally, Porter and Adejuyigbe disagree on things from time to time. And when you throw guests into the mix — who are often unfamiliar with Gilmore Girls — there are bound to be some conflicting opinions. But the hosts welcome disagreement, as disagreement leads to further and more critical discussion. As Adejuyigbe says, “It creates a discourse.”
All in all, the podcast has been a big success so far. These guys don’t boast numbers like Serial or backers like MailChimp (mail . . . kimp?), but they’re featured as a top comedy show on iTunes. Pretty impressive, considering they do everything themselves.
“I think our perspective as two guys talking about a show that primarily was intended for women, or was thought to be intended for women, felt fresh enough that it was worth it to do,” Porter told the Atlantic.
And that’s just it — yes, Gilmore Girls is centered around two strong female characters, who are supported by even more strong female characters. But the experiences Lorelai and Rory have and the emotions they feel are largely things that aren’t exclusive to just girls. Guys and girls both make friends and fall in love and go to college and drink coffee and ponder the inherent truths of everyday life. Gilmore Guys gives us the chance to go back and relive Stars Hollow through male eyes.
Gilmore Guys is currently recapping season two of the show, so there’s plenty more fun to come. Catch up now and reminisce about the golden days of Gilmore Girls along with them! Mrs. Kim would definitely approve.
Kevin and Demi: If the guest seat is ever open, I’ll be there faster than you can say “Oy, with the poodles already.” Full disclosure, I’m #TeamJess and my favorite character is Paul Anka.
