Turns out the “Gilmore Girls” wedding was actually supposed to be waaaay different

In the unlikely chance that you STILL haven’t seen Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix, don’t read any further as this post contains some ~serious~ SPOILERS.

While on-screen, most couples have to overcome a thousand obstacles in order to make their magical wedding happen but the Gilmore Girls wedding in “Fall” between our favorite couple, Luke and Lorelai, seemed to go off without a hitch. It seemed perfect. It turns out that there was some serious behind the scenes wedding drama due to budget constraints.

Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino revealed to TVLine that the budget for the revival was cut, forcing ASP to have to rethink how they were going to do the infamous wedding without many of their initial plans.

ASP explained, “The wedding was originally a much bigger deal. The wedding was a whole shebang. And then they took money away from us. Anything that has extras in it and costumes became a production nightmare. So we had to figure out how to make this wedding satisfying without doing ‘The Big Wedding.’”

Despite the budget cuts, ASP and her husband and producing partner Dan Palladino, knew they had to keep the wedding in the plot, as it was one of the most anticipated events of the revival for fans who longed for Luke and Lorelai to get hitched during the original run.

“We knew we had to do a wedding. We knew we had to get them married. There was no way we were getting out of this without getting them married. The fans have waited too long.

Ultimately, ASP and Palladino think the intimate ceremony worked out for the better and is proud of the way the revival ended.

“You can bitch and moan about monetary and budget restrictions, but sometimes working in a tight frame forces you to do things that you wouldn’t normally have done that wind up actually being dramatically better. In paring all of the bells and whistles away, we get down to the crux of really what it is: It’s Luke, Lorelai and Rory. And that made it intimate and gave it more feeling."

While we definitely thought there was something interesting about the wedding, we agree that the wedding montage was the PERFECT segue into the famous four words. We love Luke and Lorelai are so happy they’re finally married!
