According to Amy Sherman-Palladino, Rory would consider getting an abortion on “Gilmore Girls”

During its six season run on The WB (and one season on The CW), you can’t exactly say that Gilmore Girls tackled any hard-hitting issues. While the show did deal with things like loss, divorce, confusing relationships, and stealing boats, most of the action revolved around getting more coffee. However, now there might be, considering the events at the very end of A Year in the Life: According to Amy Sherman-Palladino, Rory would consider having an abortion.

In a new interview with BuzzFeed, ASP and her husband (and also writing, producing, and directing partner, Daniel Palladino) the two discuss this heavy subject, as they — the masterminds behind Rory Gilmore — try and figure out what she would do in this situation. We know what her mother did 32 years ago, but now at age 32 herself, is Rory ready for this?

“The abortion issue is so weird, you know, because it’s so testy with the world, especially the KKK world that we now live in,” ASP explains. “But I think that somebody as smart as Rory is going to take a step back and look at all the angles, and then make her decision, because it’s too important a job to make the wrong decision when it comes to kids.”

While this is a heavy conversation to have — with anyone right now, Gilmore girl or not — it’s a super important conversation to have, too. It’s also incredibly topical and fitting now as our country (Stars Hollow, included) sees a new president take office, and a new president who might not agree with a woman’s right to choose, let alone keeping Planned Parenthood up and running. If there’s anyone who’s going to make sure that their voices in this on-going discussion are heard, it’s Lorelai and Rory.

And on top of that, Rory is going to make the best decision she sees fit for herself right now, even if that does mean having an abortion.

“Unless [Rory thinks], I’m really going to make a go at this and that’s really going to make me happy, and I’m really gonna make this kid happy [she’s not going to do it],” ASP continued, before adding, “32 is frickin’ young, man.”

As we know, because we’ve seen Rory grow up before our eyes, she’s not going to make any sort of rash spur-of-the-moment decision (unless, it includes stealing a boat). While we might not agree with all her life choices, we do know that she’s got a good head on her shoulder, and an excellent support team watching out for her. They’re all going to help her make the best decision possible for her, and her future, and whatever choices that entails. We’ll just have to wait and see exactly where that takes Rory.
