I took my mom to the “Gilmore Girls” premiere and we had the *best* mother-daughter date night

As an adult, it’s not every day you get a real chance to hang out with your mom. Sure, I’ve gone out to lunch with my mom dozens of times, and every now and then we’ll do a Target run, but between all the adult things we have to do, it’s hard to carve out a solid amount of time to just hang out and be mom and daughter. It’s also even harder because, well, I live 3,000 miles away from home.

So, when a once-in-a-life-time oppertunity comes up for you and your mom, you two have to do it. Even if it means convincing your mom to get on a plane and fly 3,000 miles across the country for three days.

That’s actually exactly what I had to do a week and a half ago, when I was invited to go to Gilmore Girls premiere. I was invited to go as press (because, duh, have you read all 207 of my Gilmore Girls articles over the last 11 months?) and I was granted a plus one — it just had to be my mom.

Convincing her to come took roughly three days. It’s not that she was against coming — trust me, she wanted to come — everything just had to line up perfectly for her, from the travel arrangements, to the flight, to the fact that I had to be the one to pick her up at the airport.

She was being more of an Emily Gilmore than a Lorelai, but that’s besides the point.

The funny thing about this whole situation is that my mom had actully just been talking about how she *so* wanted to go to a press event with me — and that’s kind of a weird thing. Like, as much as I wish I could take my mom to interviews and press junkets, it’s not like I realistically can. I don’t really think there’s anything like “take your mom to work day” especially if your work (like mine) is roughly 50% poking around the internet, 50% widely speculating about television.

But there I was, showing up to the Gilmore Girls premiere with my mom in tow. If you’ve never been to a premiere, know that they can be very hectic, and it’s easy to get lost in the hustle of everything. I had a spot on the red blue carpet, and during the hour I was going to be up close and personal with Gilmore Girls cast and crew, my mom was going to hang out in the theater directly adjacent to the carpet.

Except that instead, my mom actually came with me to the red carpet. That was a real thing that happened. I took my mom to work, and then the two of us ended up on the Gilmore Girls red carpet together.

I could tell that she was slightly overwhelmed with everything, but she was also so excited. Because, just imagine it: a 50-something lady who raised three girls (and three dogs) and suddenly she’s on the red carpet for a world premiere of a television show she actually LIKES? Oh, because I forgot to tell you, my mom dislikes about 95% of all television. But, she watched Gilmore Girls with my younger sister (I was already away at college), and in case you’re wondering, she is Team Logan. Everything about this was right out of some crazy dream for her.

My mom was also such a mom on the red carpet. Instead of taking pictures of the famous stars walking by, she took pictures of me.

Or, the back of my head as I talked to the stars of Gilmore Girls. I like to think that next time she bumps into the mom of one of my elementary school friends, she’s going to pull these pictures out and brag about me big time.

On the way home from the premiere (and, this is after we saw “Winter” and after the Gilmore Girls after party, which was ?) all my mom could do was gush about everything. She gushed about how much she enjoyed the first episode of the revival. She gushed about how the girls working for Netflix were so nice to her. She gushed about the snacks at the after party, and how the event was so well done.

But most importantly, she gushed about how she had truly just experienced a once-in-a-life-time event, and that we had been there together for it. That’s key, since when is the next time I’m realistically going to be able to invite my mom anywhere? I live 3,000 miles away from her!

Honestly, we could have gone to the theater across the way and seen Fantastic Beasts instead of Gilmore Girls, and my mom still would have had an amazing time, because moms just like spending time with their kids.

My mom will most certainly always remember that one time she came to the big fancy Gilmore Girls premiere with me. And I’ll always remember that one time I convinced my mom to fly across the country to literally watch one episode of television with me. True #DateNightWithMom goals.

Also, I’m sorry if I made you cry reading this, mom.
