Get your patronus ready because this is the world’s favorite “Harry Potter” spell

Chances are, the first time you read (or saw) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, you proceeded to sit by the window and wait for the mailman to deliver your Hogwarts letter. Because wouldn’t life as a witch or wizard be the most fun thing ever? Just think of the possibilities. Instead of studying chemistry, you’d learn to brew your own potions. Instead of gym class, you’d learn how to fly through the air on a broom.

One of the most enchanting parts of the wizarding world are the spells that Harry, Ron and Hermione learn throughout their time at Hogwarts. Imagine being able to light up the room to find your phone charger in the middle of the night with a simple “Lumos,” or summon some Oreos to fly out of a kitchen cabinet and land on your lap by commanding, “Accio!” Those two spells are at the top of the list, but there’s one that’s a clear favorite among Potterheads: Expecto patronum.

Last week, an event called Harry Potter Book Night: A Night of Spells was held around the world to introduce the book series to a younger generation of readers. Bloomsbury Children’s Books polled readers to find out once and for all what the most-loved spell is, and the winner was Expecto patronum, the spell used to conjure up a Patronus.

A Patronus is described as a “wisp of silvery gas” that takes on the form of something positive—something unique and special to the wizard who cast it. It’s used as the first line of defense against Dementors, evil creatures who suck the light and life out of everything. In a way, a Patronus is like a spirit animal. The spell was introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when Harry takes private Defense Against the Dark Arts lessons with Professor Lupin.

“The spell I am going to try and teach you is highly advanced magic, Harry—well beyond Ordinary Wizarding Level. It is called the Patronus Charm,” Lupin says to Harry. “The Patronus is a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the Dementor feeds upon—hope, happiness, the desire to survive.”

Accio came in second place and Wingardium leviosa was a close third. Rounding out the top five spells were Expelliarmus and Lumos.
