“Get Out” just got so many major Oscar nominations, as it should

This morning, January 23rd, the nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards were announced. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri seem to be the films to beat. They’ve already scooped up numerous awards at the 2018 Golden Globes, 2018 Critics’ Choice, and 2018 SAG Awards. Get Out also received several major Oscar noms, as it should, and we’re clapping.

Get Out was nominated this morning for Best Picture, Best Lead Actor (Daniel Kaluuya), Best Director (Jordan Peele), and Best Original Screenplay (Jordan Peele).

The news of Get Out’s multiple nominations is a breath of fresh air after the film was snubbed at the 75th annual Golden Globes, where lead actor Daniel Kaluuya was nominated for Best Actor and the film as a whole was nominated for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. But both wins went to other nominees. Jordan Peele, the film’s creator, wasn’t nominated at all, which many found to be problematic and a miscarriage of merit.

However, Peele was recognized at the Critics’ Choice Awards earlier this month. He was nominated for Best Director and won the award for Best Original Screenplay. Get Out also took home a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie.

Although Daniel Kaluuya was nominated for Best Male Actor, and the entire Get Out cast received a nomination for their work, the film did not take home any awards on January 21st at the SAG Awards.

Get Out deserves all the recognition, nominations, and wins it’s received so far, and we can’t wait to see how it fares at the Oscars.
