Georgina Chapman, Harvey Weinstein’s wife, broke her silence on the disgraced movie mogul’s sexual assault allegations

By now, more than six months after the hashtag #MeToo began trending on social media, dozens of women have come forward with sexual harassment and assault allegations against disgraced media mogul Harvey Weinstein. But despite the din surrounding Weinstein, Georgina Chapman, his estranged wife, has refrained from commenting on the situation. Now, in a new interview, Chapman has broken her silence about the accusations for the first time.

In an interview for the June issue of Vogue, published today, May 10th, Chapman spoke candidly about her marriage and the effect that the revelations of her husband’s abuse had on her life. The fashion designer behind the brand Marchesa told Vogue that after the news broke, she was “so humiliated and so broken” that she didn’t appear in public for five months. She said she knew nothing of Weinstein’s predatory behavior and spoke of the complicated array of emotions she felt after learning about his past abuses.

"There was a part of me that was terribly naive — clearly, so naive," Chapman said in her interview. "I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, I have moments of disbelief! And I have moments when I just cry for my children. What are their lives going to be?"

She also noted that it was her decision to pull her lines from recent fashion weeks and refrain from dressing celebrities during the last round of awards shows. “We didn’t feel it was appropriate given the situation,” she said. “All the women who have been hurt deserve dignity and respect, so I want to give it the time it deserves. It’s a time for mourning, really.”

In a preface to the issue’s cover story, legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour defended Chapman, writing that she was “firmly convinced that Georgina had no idea about her husband’s behavior.”

Weinstein’s influence was beneficial to Marchesa in its early years — he was once a producer for Project Runway and persuaded stars of his movies to wear Marchesa gowns. And because of Weinstein’s connection to the brand, celebrities have avoided wearing it for public appearances. Scarlett Johansson’s 2018 Met Gala dress has been the only Marchesa gown to appear on the red carpet since the Weinstein allegations broke.

Chapman announced her decision to leave Weinstein shortly after the allegations emerged in October.
