George R.R. Martin is dropping hints about the ‘Game of Throne’ ending

Here’s something that might keep you up late at night and worrying about Arya Stark: George R. R. Martin has no idea how his Song of Ice and Fire saga is going to end. Martin is currently in the middle of writing The Winds of Winter, and while he might know how that novel wraps up, he hasn’t really got a clue about A Dream of Spring. No idea. None at all. So we can hypothesize and theorize all we want about what’s going to happen to the remaining Stark children (all… four of them? Anyone heard from Rickon in a while?) but the master scribe himself doesn’t know yet, either.

Talking to the Observer, Martin admitted that he “[hasn’t] written the ending yet.” So while he might have figured out the events that get our remaining characters to their final destination, he doesn’t know how it’ll all wrap up in the end. The one thing Martin does know, though, is that he wants the ending to be “bittersweet.” But of course.

“I’ve said before that the tone of the ending that I’m going for is bittersweet,” He explained, “I mean, it’s no secret that [J. R. R] Tolkien has been a huge influence on me, and I love the way he ended Lord of the Rings. It ends with a victory, but it’s a bittersweet victory.”

For anyone who doesn’t have time to read through the epic LotR novels know that while the heroes do manage to save the day and snuff out the evil in the land, it takes a great toll on them at the same time. And then Frodo gets on a boat and leaves the Shire once and for all because he just can’t deal with the weight of his journey anymore, and it’s actually one of the saddest endings in all of literature, you guys.

Now knowing that Martin might be going for that same kind of ending? Oh boy. It’s been speculated before that Martin would end the novels with a reunion of the Stark children (IF ANY OF THEM ARE LEFT??) and while we could still get that ending, it sounds like it won’t be the happy, joyous occasion we were hoping for.

There’s still time for this to change, of course. Since, you know, Martin’s still not done writing. He should just close all the open tabs on his computer and get down to business, TBH (JK, Martin, we love you and we know it takes time to create the epic, intense masterpiece that is Game of Thrones).
