George Michael was on an early version of “Carpool Karaoke” and it’s warming our hearts
We’re still reeling from the news of George Michael’s death. The singer was in inspiration for many other musicians, as well as many members of the LGBTQ+ community. Through our sadness, though, we’re also celebrating his entire life. And we just realized – James Corden basically originated Carpool Karaoke with George Michael.
We already know that Carpool Karaoke almost didn’t happen ’till Mariah Carey agreed to appear on it. But we forgot that George Michael, who we’re just learning was super generous, was in a proto-version for Comic Relief. We have both superstars to thank for what’s essentially our favorite video series.
During a visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Corden explained how it all came to be. Corden, as his character from the British sitcom Gavin and Stacey, would pretend to be good friends with George Michael. The two would basically drive around, singing some of Michael’s classics.

Corden tells Colbert, “My original idea was to pick George Michael up from prison in a car. And then we realized, ‘Maybe we’ll lose the prison, but what if there’s still some fun for me and George to be in the car and we’ll sing some Wham! songs?'
In the original sketch for Comic Relief, George Michael reveals some solid comedic chops as well as the ability to laugh at himself. He and Corden sing along to the songs while dancing a little in their seats. It’s utterly charming, and it’s definitely warming our hearts on this sad day.

Corden was one of the first celebrities to express his sadness at Michael’s passing. He posted heartfelt tributes to Twitter, and we can’t help tear up at them.
I've loved George Michael for as long as I can remember. He was an absolute inspiration. Always ahead of his time.

George Michael wrote Praying for Time 25 years ago but I truly believe it's message means more now than ever. https://t.co/f03zlWYbLa

Thankfully, Corden has the memories of his time with George Michael, and his involvement in the precursor to Carpool Karaoke. Truly, that’s a gift to us all.
