Whoa, George Lucas just officially broke up with ‘Star Wars’

It’s a good thing Facebook introduced that nifty relationship limiter for your ex this past week, because George Lucas is going to need it.

Since Star Wars first appeared on the big screen back in 1977, creator Lucas has been involved in every movie in the franchise to date, whether he was writing it, producing it, or directing it. His role has changed from movie-to-movie, but he’s always been there and present in some capacity. However for the new Force Awakens, he wasn’t involved in the process at all. In Lucas’ own words, the reason for this is that he actually “broke up” with the saga.

Lucas has previously admitted that he’s not interested in directing another Star Wars movie, citing the fact that fact that “it’s not much fun…[because] all you do is get criticized.” He’s opening up about the fact that he and Star Wars are never, ever getting back together. Like, ever.

In an upcoming interview with CBS This Morning for Kennedy Center Honors, Lucas sat down and discussed the parting of the ways with Charlie Ross. When Lucasfilm was bought by Disney back in 2012, and Disney announced that they were planning to make brand new Star Wars movies, Lucas and Mickey immediately disagreed over what the new movies would be about.

“The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans,’” Lucas explained. “People don’t actually realize it’s actually a soap opera and it’s all about family problems — it’s not about spaceships. So they decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, ‘fine…. I’ll go my way and I let them go their way.’”

That way meant completely stepping away from The Force.

“When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls. The second rule, you don’t go over to their house and drive by to see what they’re doing,” he continued. “The third one is you don’t show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it… You just say ‘Nope, gone, history, I’m moving forward.’”

At least this breakup has been a friendly one, and Lucas is still more than game to discuss Luke, Leia, and Han. But as for everything else, he seems perfectly fine to have passed the galaxy far far away over to someone else.
