George Lucas disses Disney while talking about ‘The Force Awakens’
Just when you think balance has finally been resorted to the Force, someone has to come along and mess it all up. This time, though, it’s Jedi Master himself George Lucas. Looking for more details of the beef we all suspected? It’s all out in the air now.
On Christmas Day, a pre-taped interview with George Lucas with British presenter Charlie Rose aired. Lucas sat down with Rose for an in-depth interview about everything, and that includes Star Wars. As Star Wars fans know, Lucas loves his Star Wars a lot. In the interview, he refers to the saga (including the prequels) as his “kids.” He’s spent the better part of his life involved with the galaxy far, far away, and previously, he’s mentioned that selling Star Wars to Disney was like “breaking up” with it.
Now, he’s saying a whole lot more about this breakup, and it doesn’t sound like it was amicable. George Lucas, you’re breaking my heart.
To put it in Star Wars terms, Lucas has basically called for a vote of no confidence in the new movies. He’s not a fan, and seeing as how everyone else on the planet has formed an opinion about the movie, he has, too.
“They wanted to do a retro movie. I don’t like that,” he explained to Rose. “Every movie, I worked very hard to make them different. I made them completely different — different planets, different spaceships to make it new.”
“[Disney wasn’t] that keen to have me involved anyway, [because] if I get in there, I’m just going to cause trouble, because they’re not going to do what I want them to do. And I don’t have the control to do that anymore, and all I would do is muck everything up. And so I said, ‘OK, I will go my way, and I’ll let them go their way.’ ”
Lucas had always planned to make nine Star Wars movies in total: the three original, the three prequels, and then three sequels about Han and Leia’s children. However, after the prequels came and went to little fanfare, he stepped away from them all together. That’s when Disney came in, bought it from him, and the rest, you know, is the new Force Awakens.
And TBH, Force Awakens is amazing because it went back to those “retro” roots of a couple of underdogs trying to save the galaxy.
In Lucas’ defense, it makes sense that he’s bummed about by the new movies because they’re not his vision. Imagine spending your whole life dreaming up one story, and then having Mickey Mouse do the opposite.
But still, insulting your (metaphorical) kids’ new parent is NOT going to bring balance to the Force, you guys. What would Yoda say if he were here?? He’d be most displeased. (Especially with this part.)
