George Lucas finally reveals his favorite ‘Star Wars’ character
It looks like Star Wars mastermind George Lucas is going to be breaking a lot of hearts today — including ours. In a video interview with Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit, the filmmaking legend revealed that if he had to choose one character to be in the Star Wars universe, he’d pick Jar Jar Binks — largely considered the least-liked character from the entire franchise.
Say it isn’t so, Mr. Lucas!
Of course, the answer isn’t necessarily all that surprising; and it’s entirely possible the director is just pulling our leg. As Time points out, Lucas has been extremely vocal in the past about resenting the Jar Jar Binks hate — going so far as to explain that the character was inspired by Disney’s Goofy. (And who doesn’t love Goofy?) Perhaps the unexpected answer was his way of trying to tip the scales in the clumsy Gungan’s favor. Whether or not we agree with his choice, we’re just going to have to accept it as his official stance until further notice.
Controversial favorite character aside, the video is well worth a watch in its entirety, and is surprisingly revealing for something that’s only a couple minutes long. Lucas delves into why he won’t be directing a Star Wars film ever again, what he fears for the franchise, and what he plans to do in the future. When asked if there’s any advice he’d give to whoever directs upcoming Star Wars films (J.J. Abrams included, of course), he responded, “There’s more to it than just spaceships.”
We couldn’t think of a more perfect response. You can watch the entire video for yourself over at Vanity Fair, and — of course — Star Wars: The Force Awakens when it comes out in theaters next month.
