This “Genderless Nipples” account is challenging sexist nudity standards on Instagram, and heck yes!
We think we can all agree that our society has a double standard when it comes to the male and female body. Case in point: Instagram’s nipple policy. As in, it’s totally okay for guys to appear topless in posts, but should a woman do it, the post is promptly removed due to Insta’s ‘community guidelines.’ What gives?
Help is on the way. The ‘Genderless Nipples’ Insta account is challenging the no-nipples policy by posting photos of male and female nipples that are so close up, you can’t tell which gender they belong to. Genius!
Their account launched last month, and numerous people have already submitted photos of their nipples. Of course, you can’t tell what’s what at all, so it basically highlights the issue in the most perfect way ever (because there truly is no real difference!). Seriously, who cares about a glimpse of a woman’s nipple? They are perfectly normal things!
Here’s what co-creator Evelyne Wyss told Buzzfeed:
"We are not against following the rules, but we think these should be applied to all genders equally. By uploading a close-up picture, how could Instagram even tell the difference? We want to show them their guidelines won’t work in today’s society anymore."
"All through life there were distinctions - toilets for men, toilets for women; clothes for men, clothes for women - then, at the end, the graves are identical." - Leila Aboulela.
Genderless Nipples already has over 70,000 followers, and we know that its reach will go far and wide. Kudos to the team for creating such a necessary example of gender inequality. Much like breastfeeding, female nipples are nothing to be fussed over.
"All nipples are good nipples."
Exactly. And they are just a body part. No biggie.
