Gay rights activists marched in India, and we’re cheering on their bravery
In the U.S. and beyond, LGBTQ+ rights have so far to go. And in New Delhi, many gathered to push for equality. Recently, hundreds marched in India for LGBT rights to challenge discrimination against the queer community, and we’re cheering on their bravery. The New Delhi pride parade is giving us all the feels, and we’re so hopeful about the future of queer rights in India. The fact that gay rights activists marched in India is a *huge* deal, and we’re commending their efforts.
The LGBT rights activists in New Delhi marched for equality, and also for justice, when they gathered on Sunday.
And according to LGBTQ Nation, a part of the reason the gay rights activists marched in India was to fight against a law makes gay sex punishable by up to 10 years in prison. There is a long history of queerness being criminalized, both officially and unofficially, around the world. That’s why protests and pride parades remain so politicized, and *so* important despite how much progress we feel like we’ve made.
Even here in the U.S., many worry about what a Trump victory means for LGBT rights. While Trump may not be anti-gay, his staff is, so many LGBTQ+ folks are a little worried that we’ll go backwards in terms of queer rights. All around the world LGBTQ people are dehumanized and harmed, and unable to live the lives they deserve to live. It just isn’t okay.
We’re sending these brave activists nothing but love and support, and remain hopeful that we as a world continue to fight for justice for all LGBTQ+ folks.
