Hop in the flying car — there’s a brand new roller coaster coming to Harry Potter World
Universal Orlando is trading in the Triwizard Tournament for Honeydukes in a new Hogsmeade-themed attraction coming to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
The ever-expanding Harry Potter theme park is saying goodbye to the Dragon Challenge roller coaster — loosely based on the first task of the Triwizard Tournament from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire — to make room for a new ride that will take guests through the wizarding village neighboring Hogwarts. According to the official announcement, the new roller coaster is set to be a thrilling adventure through the magical town and will be unlike anything the park has ever done before.
As Universal Orlando writes on their blog:
"This all-new thrill ride will take you deeper into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, where you will encounter some of your favorite characters and creatures. It’ll be unlike anything we’ve ever done before and it will be fun for the entire family. The new attraction will be one of the most highly-themed coaster experiences we’ve created. It will combine a new level of storytelling with an action-packed adventure…and a few surprises along the way."
While not many details have been divulged, it appears the new Hogsmeade ride will be an immersive adventure through the beloved town, frequented by everyone from Harry and his friends to Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall and even the Minister of Magic. It’ll certainly be interesting to see if the Hogsmeade-themed ride incorporates any of the Harry Potter narrative into the story. While nothing too major ever explicitly took place in Hogsmeade, it played a major role in many of Harry and company’s adventures — from the secret passages into the Hogwarts grounds, to being home, to the Shrieking Shack.
Dragon Challenges will close to the public on September 4th, but soon enough, we’ll be zooming past the Three Broomsticks on the new roller coaster, which is set to open in 2019!
