This “Game of Thrones” theory about The Hound is so insane it could work

On Sunday, Game of Thrones returned from its year-long hiatus with a vengeance and left us with more questions than ever, but there’s one theory in particular that has us scratching our heads. Based on a certain scene in the premiere, there’s a new theory that Sandor Clegane aka The Hound might be The Prince That Was Promised.
During the episode, the former soldier was in the midst of his journey North with Beric Dondarrion, Thoros of Myr, and the rest of the Brothers Without Banners to fight the oncoming White Walkers. As they traveled, The Hound endlessly mocked Beric and Thoros’s devotion to the Lord of Light…that is until Thoros encourages him to seriously look into the fire. The Hound is apparently able to read the flames.
And with that, The Hound became the latest candidate for Azor Ahai aka The Prince That Was Promised.
The noted skeptic — whose fear of fire is *pretty* well-documented in the series — was definitely shocked by his ability to read the flames. The flames directed the group toward “where the Wall meets the sea” aka Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, where Tormund and the Wildlings are also headed to guard the Night’s Watch post.
Now, the idea of The Prince That Was Promised has been around since season two, when Melissandre emerged to tell Stannis he was the savior King. If you remember, The Prince That Was Promised is the reincarnation of Azor Ahai — a legendary figure who defeated the darkness of the long Winter with his flaming sword, Lightbringer — who will kill the White Walkers with his flaming sword. Since Stannis is dead and the White Walkers are *definitely* coming, the real identity of the reincarnated Azor Ahai is more important than ever.
There are a LOT of theories surrounding the identity of The Prince That Was Promised. Right now, Daenerys Targeryen and Jon Snow are the most popular candidates, but fans have also theorized that it could be Ser Davos Seaworth, Tyrion Lannister, Beric Dondarrion, or even Jamie Lannister.
With The Hound’s history — having been almost killed by his brother with fire and cheating death on numerous occasions — the theory that he could be Azor Ahai is pretty compelling. We’ll definitely be interested in seeing how this theory plays out in future episodes.
