The “Game of Thrones” showrunners have announced their next series, will also feature a war (but no dragons)

Game of Thrones may be inching ever so closer to the end — Season 7 is currently airing on HBO and Season 8 will be its last — but HBO isn’t going to let go of showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss just yet.

HBO announced that it has commissioned a new series from the GoT heads and there are no dragons or White Walkers in sight. According to Variety, the new series Confederate takes place in a modern day “America” in which the South was able to secede from the Union and formed its own country where slavery is still an institution. The series takes place in the demilitarized zone on the Mason Dixon line and follows characters on either side.

Confederate will follow a series of events that will eventually lead to the Third American Civil War.

While HBO is currently working on at least four potential GoT spin-offs — Benioff and Weiss are not actively involved in any of the projects — their work on the groundbreaking series has made the premium cable network eager to keep their relationship alive.

“As the brilliant ‘Game of Thrones’ winds down to its final season, we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Dan and David, knowing that any subject they take on will result in a unique and ambitious series, said HBO programming president, Casey Bloys in a statement. “Their intelligent, wry and visually stunning approach to storytelling has a way of engaging an audience and taking them on an unforgettable journey. ‘Confederate’ promises to be no exception, and we are honored to be adding the talented team of Nichelle and Malcolm Spellman to the mix.

In their own statement, Benioff and Weiss revealed that Confederate had initially been envisioned as a feature film but working on a TV show with the cinematic caliber of Game of Thrones — combined their incredibly tight relationship with HBO — convinced the two that their new project would be better off as a series.

“We have discussed ‘Confederate’ for years, originally as a concept for a feature film. But our experience on ‘Thrones’ has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO, "said Benioff and Weiss. "There won’t be dragons or White Walkers in this series, but we are creating a world, and we couldn’t imagine better partners in world-building than Nichelle and Malcolm, who have impressed us for a long time with their wit, their imagination and their Scrabble-playing skills.

Not gonna lie, we’re kind of going to miss the dragons — but we’re interested in seeing Benioff and Weiss’s take on an alternative ending to the Civil War, even if we have roughly a thousand questions about it.

Much like their roles on Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss will serve as Confederate‘s showrunners, executive producers and writers. Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Malcolm Spellman will also co-write the series and executive produce, while Game of Thrones producers Carolyn Strauss and Bernadette Caulfield will serve as executive producers. The series will start production after the final season of GoT wraps.
