“Game of Thrones” just revealed who will direct the final season

With production for the highly anticipated final season of Game of Thrones beginning at any moment — some of the cast are already gearing up! — HBO has just released the names of the directors who are set for Season 8. And Game of Thrones fans should be pretty excited.

Because the six-episode final season of Game of Thrones is enlisting some stellar talent.

Specifically, Miguel Sapochnik, David Nutter, and — wait for it — creators, writers, and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will direct.

While Weiss and Benioff have each directed one episode of the series apiece, it appears they’ll team up to direct the series finale, leaving Sapochnik and Nutter to take on the remaining episodes.

We’re certainly excited to see David and Dan take the series full circle, and we’re also thrilled to see that the majority of the episodes will have two of Game of Thrones’ best directors at the helm.

While he was missing from Season 7, Sapochnik has directed some of Game of Thrones‘ most iconic episodes, including the first battle against the White Walkers in the Season 5 episode “Hardhome.” He also oversaw “Battle of the Bastards” — for which he won an Emmy — and the *literally* explosive Season 6 finale, “The Winds of Winter.”

Nutter hasn’t directed any Game of Thrones episodes since Season 5, but he’s directed some of the biggest game-changing moments in the series’ history. He directed one of the most shocking scenes in Game of Thrones — The Red Wedding, which saw the deaths of Robb Stark (Richard Madden), his pregnant wife Talisa (Oona Chaplin), and Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) in “The Rains of Castamere.”

Nutter also oversaw the betrayal and death — for a bit, at least — of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) in “Mother’s Mercy,” which he won an Emmy for.

With Sapochnik and Nutter (probably) directing at least two episodes each, we’re sure we’re going to see some spectacular battles and heart-wrenching deaths. Coupled with Benioff and Weiss’ series finale, we have a feeling that the short final season of Game of Thrones could be the best ever.

The last season of Game of Thrones is set to air sometime between late 2018 and early 2019.
