The women of “Game of Thrones” are getting way less screen time than the men, and this is not cool

Last season of Game of Thrones may have thrust the female characters into the spotlight and declared that “all men must die,” but according to a new study, the women of Westeros have gotten way less screen time than the men.

Cersei would surely have something to say about that!

HBO’s Game of Thrones has faced criticism over female representation in the past. From the way it portrays sex workers to its controversial rape scenes, let’s just say the show has work to do before it becomes a beacon of feminism. And how else could it improve? Well, in a new study by Looker, we can easily see how many episodes and how much screen time the ladies of Game of Thrones have had — and again: It’s less than the guys.

Let’s break this down. Over the past six seasons, the 45 male characters appeared onscreen for a combined 2,265.8 minutes, and the 22 female characters claimed 1,205.8 minutes.

There are fewer women, so in a way the overall numbers make sense, right?

Well, yes and no. The top screen time goes to Tyrion Lannister with 293.2 minutes, while the highest woman on the list is Daenerys Targaryen with 221.3 minutes. That’s more than an hour difference between the two.

Here’s another way to look at it:

Jon Snow and Dany were in the exact same number of episodes, so they’re even easier to compare. Over 49 episodes, Jon had about 47 more minutes of screen time than Dany. That’s almost an entire episode.

But word on the street (aka Entertainment Weekly) is that this upcoming season, Dany will be getting plenty of screen time. So, let’s hope we get more Cersei, Sansa, Dany, and Arya when Season 7 of Game of Thrones returns on July 16th.
