This “Game of Thrones” theory about Tyrion Lannister has us seriously LOLing
In between seasons, us Game of Thrones fans need something to pass the time. Whether it’s a sneak peek into Arya Stark’s Season 7 wardrobe or a theory about Tyrion Lannister’s alcohol tolerance, we’re pretty much down to watch any fan theory out there. And the latest is a doozy.
YouTube channel The Film Theorists recently released a video that tries to answer the question, “How drunk is Tyrion Lannister?”
They actually use science and history to try to explain it. And we have to say, we’re pretty impressed by the level of detail that they’ve considered. Here’s how the theory goes.
1. Several historical facts place Game of Thrones in the time period of the post-Columbian exchange in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Why? GoT has a pretty advanced knowledge of medicine, they have large cities with standing armies, and a global trading system, according to The Film Theorists. Also, the wine on the show is corked and aged (as displayed by the wine merchant who tries to poison Daenerys in Season 1), which brings us to our next point.
2. Aged and fortified wine is strong.
In the 16th century, fortified wines like malmsey, sherry, and port were extremely popular. On average, those wines are 22 percent abv. That’s twice as strong as most of the stuff we’re drinking today.
3. Tyrion’s portion sizes are totally out of control.
An average serving of wine is 4 to 5 ounces, and the goblets that Tyrion uses are probably about 10, compared to similar goblets on the market today. And in the show, Tyrion is filling those cups to the brim.
4.That means we’re looking at servings that are twice as large and twice as strong as the average glass of wine.
(And you thought a couple glasses of pinot got you tipsy!)
5. Therefore, Tyrion’s BAC would be really, really high.
Peter Dinklage is about 4’5″ tall and weighs about 100 pounds. If a man of that height and weight drinks six glasses of fortified wine in two hours, that puts his blood alcohol content somewhere between 0.30 and 0.35. And that’s a very conservative estimate.
Let us remind you that 0.08 is the legal limit for driving!
Scientific conclusion: Tyrion Lannister is very, very drunk.
