There was a pivotal scene cut from the “Game of Thrones” season finale, and we need to see it ASAP
Warning, the following post contains a whole lot of spoilers for the Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones, “The Dragon and The Wolf.” If you still haven’t seen the episode yet, hop on over to HBO ASAP because you’re going to want to talk about it.
Clocking in at 79 minutes and 43 seconds, the Season 7 Game of Thrones finale was the longest episode to date, and it was FULL of drama. But it turns out, the episode was almost even longer. One of the biggest “holy shit” moments of the episode occurred at Winterfell when, during what looked like a final showdown between Sansa and Arya, the sisters and Bran took down Littlefinger once and for all.
Throughout the season, we watched the tension between the sisters grow, and knew that it would either result in one of their deaths…or they were secretly teaming up to take down Littlefinger. Meanwhile, the all-knowing Bran had remained largely out of the picture, so we were *almost* surprised to see him deliver some truth bombs during the final showdown.
According to Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran, there was initially a scene prior to the big reveal, where Sansa learned about Littlefinger’s many wrongdoings from her little brother.
"We actually did a scene that clearly got cut, a short scene with Sansa where she knocks on Bran’s door and says, 'I need your help,' or something along those lines," Hempstead Wright revealed to Variety. "So basically, as far as I know, the story was that it suddenly occurred to Sansa that she had a huge CCTV [closed-circuit television] department at her discretion and it might be a good idea to check with him first before she guts her own sister. So she goes to Bran, and Bran tells her everything she needs to know, and she’s like, 'Oh, shit.'
While we totally understand why the scene got cut from the episode, we seriously need to see it.
The entire Stark vs. Littlefinger reveal was so tense and satisfying that it might have ruined the magic a *little* bit to have seen Sansa access her “CCTV” and learn about Littlefinger prior to the moment she revealed that he was the one on trial.
However, Hempstead Wright’s comments definitely make it clear that the tension between Sansa and Arya wasn’t a total sham and we were right to be ridiculously concerned and frustrated by their unnecessary squabbling. It also means serious props to Sansa for doing due diligence, and taking the initiative to talk to her “all-knowing” brother before putting her sister on trial. We’re not sure others (ahem, Arya) would have thought to make sure they were right before making an accusation as intense as treason.
Fingers crossed HBO releases the deleted scene for us to view in all its glory. We’re going to need all the Game of Thrones material we can get our hands on while we wait (forever) for Season 8.
