The “Game of Thrones” Season 7 premiere broke *these* TV records
The seventh season of Game of Thrones finaaally premiered last night, and it broke all kinds of crazy TV records. But to be honest, we’re not surprised in the slightest.
Shall we begin…with the social media response? Because it was pretty incredible.
(And warning, some spoilers from the episode lie ahead!)
The premiere was the most tweeted about Game of Thrones episode of ALL time, with a staggering 2.4 million+ tweets. That is prettttty incredible, especially considering that the competition includes jaw-dropping episodes like “The Rains of Castamere” and “The Red Woman.”
So yeah, there was some v. important fangirling surrounding the episode:

Twitter reported that some of the most tweeted about characters included Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, and Cersei Lannister. Oh, and Ed Sheeran’s appearance took up 7% of the Game of Thrones Twitter conversation…because…duh.
Needless to say, Twitter had a whole lot of feelings about his turn on the show.
The episode ALSO broke all kind of records for HBO, bringing in 16.1 million viewers — a 50% increase from last season’s premiere.
And that’s especially notable because this season premiered in the summer, while Season 6 premiered in the spring — and TV viewership is usually higher during the latter.
The premiere was also the most watched season premiere for HBO ever. Which, again, we’re really not that surprised by because hello, people are OBSESSED — us included, of course.
Second to our excitement about finally returning to Westeros is getting to see everyone else’s excitement. So, here’s to a lot more excitement ahead — and impatiently waiting for the next episode. Who knows, it could just be another record breaker.
