This “Harry Potter” actor was in the “Game of Thrones” Season 7 premiere, and the internet NOTICED
Harry Potter fans got a nice surprise when a familiar face turned up in the Season 7 premiere of Game of Thrones.
Since Game of Thrones and Harry Potter both have a huge number of characters (many of which are played by British actors), it’s no surprise that there would be some crossover. And that’s exactly what happened in Game of Thrones’ “Dragonstone”.
The archmaester Sam spent time with at the Citadel was played by none other than Jim Broadbent, who filled the role of Professor Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter films.
Poor Sam has basically the worst job at the Citadel. He cleans up all types of bodily fluids, helps with autopsies, helps serve prisoners, and occasionally shelves some books in the library — but he has yet to gain access to its restricted area.
You’ll recall, the restricted section was a BIG deal in Harry Potter.
So he asks Archmaester Marwyn (Broadbent) if he can get in, even though Sam is not a maester. After all, Sam has actually dealt with the White Walkers — unlike everyone else at the Citadel. The archmaester says no and ultimately, Sam just steals the keys.
You’ll also recall, breaking into the restricted section was a thing that happened in Harry Potter.
There was just so much Harry Potter wonderfulness going on — and Twitter noticed.

Slughorn and Samwell talking about the restricted section… is this game of thrones or Harry Potter and the half blood prince?

Sam, don't ask Professor Slughorn to break the rules. Ask Harry to use his invisibility cloak to get into the restricted section #GoTS7

Was it just me or did another student ask prof slughorn about a piece of rare magic in the restricted section of the library? #GoTS7 #Potter

Even if it wasn’t an official reference to Harry Potter, it was still pretty cool to see a familiar face. Maybe we’ll see more throughout the rest of Game of Thrones Season 7 when it airs Sundays on HBO.
