“Game of Thrones” mastermind George R.R. Martin has another HBO project in the works
We fiercely adore the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. (Long live Westeros! Can we have a pet dragon IRL yet?!) And for everyone equally as obsessed with GoT and its fandom, here’s some spectacular news:
George R.R. Martin, the writer behind the book series Game of Thrones is based on, has another HBO project in the works.
Who Fears Death author Nnedi Okorafor announced on Twitter that the novel has been optioned at HBO and is in early development as a TV show. And best of all, Martin is on board as an executive producer!

According to Variety, the deal isn’t set in stone, but our fingers are certainly crossed that it will be soon.
In terms of what you can expect, Who Fears Death is pretty different than GoT.
It takes place in post-apocalyptic Africa and focuses on two tribes: the Nuru tribe and the Okeke. The Nuru tribe enslaved the Okeke and are trying to wipe them out completely. When an Okeke woman is raped by a Nuru man, she gives birth to a daughter with magical powers. Her magical powers make her a target, and she’s wanted dead.
Beyond Who Fears Death, Martin has many other projects in the works. He’s had his hand in a number of planned GoT spinoffsthat are currently being developed by HBO. Not to mention, Syfy ordered a pilot based on his novella Nightflyers.
We’ll see how Who Fears Death plays out, but if Martin serves as executive producer, it’s bound to be very intriguing. Until then, we’ll be counting down the days until Game of Thrones‘ return to HBO on July 16th.
