This fan theory says that one “Game of Thrones” character is a merman, and you will never ever guess who
We know, Game of Thrones fan theories are pretty much a dime a dozen. But it’s not every day that you hear one that claims that MERMAIDS are walking around in Westeros. Obviously, when we heard this particular theory, our ears perked up a little.
According to this Reddit fan theory, there’s evidence in the books and TV series that spymaster Varys may be part sea creature.
Let’s look at the argument a little more closely.
Mermaids do exist in George R.R. Martin’s world.
Although that description might not be the most accurate. In the books, he writes about “merlings,” which are comparable to the mermaids and mermen talked about by sailors in the Middle Ages. And Littlefinger’s ship is called “The Merlin King.”
There are a few types of sea-creature-esque types in Westeros. In the Riverlands, Brienne finds out about the Squishers. They have scales, white fish bellies, and webbed feet, but walk on land and eat humans (eek!). Then, there are the Deep Ones — another species, described by Master Theron as “half men sired by creatures of the salt seas upon human women.” They are believed to have built the Seastone Chair in the Iron Islands and the Black Stone Fortress foundation of the Hightower.
According to the theory, Varys is one of these aquatic-based creatures.
Exhibit A: In the very first book, Arya stumbles upon a conversation between Varys and his ally Illyrio Mopatis. She observes them emerging from what she thinks is a well (and therefore, water). She follows them for a while but ends up in a river.
Exhibit B: In season two, Varys and Tyrion have a very interesting conversation, in which Tyrian believes Varys is threatening his GF, Shae.
“Threaten me again and I’ll have you thrown into the sea,” Tyrion says.
“You might be disappointed in the results,” Varys responds. “The storms come and go, the big fish eat the little fish, and I keep on paddling.”
Is this just a metaphor? Or is Varys dropping hints about his true fishy self?
If you want to dive into the details even more closely, the Winter is Coming fan site offers some more tidbits on the theory. But this is the gist.
So what do you think? Could Varys truly be a mer-creature?
