There’s a new theory about how Cersei will die on GoT, and it’s actually pretty solid

They say that all men must die, and with Game of Thrones Season 8 officially upon us, we’ve been frantically trying to figure out how (or if) our favorite characters will meet their grisly ends. At this point, it seems like there are more fan theories about how the show will end than there are children of Robert Baratheon—though some are more believable than others. But one theory about Cersei’s death has definitely caught our eye.

Thanks to a flashback in Season 5, we know that when she was a child, Cersei visited a witch named Maggy the Frog, who predicted that she would marry the king and have three children, who would all die. But as Time notes, Game of Thrones left out one key detail from the A Song of Ice and Fire books: Maggy also foretold Cersei’s death, saying “the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” Since “valonqar” means “little brother” in High Valyrian, many fans have speculated that either Jaime or Tyrion will eventually kill Cersei. But a new Reddit theory argues that’s not the case.

Redditor Namez_Are_Hard recently suggested that the “valonqar” in Maggy’s prophecy is actually Cersei’s unborn child (a boy) and that she will die in childbirth. The pointed out that, “Nowhere in Mags prophecy does it say HER valonqar, just THE valonqar,” and Cersei’s future child would be the little sibling to the rest of Cersei’s children. We might need to process this for a bit.

Now, there are admittedly some factors that could throw a wrench in this theory. For starters, it’s not 100% clear that Cersei is really pregnant. She told Jaime she was at the end of Season 7, but in the Season 8 premiere, she was back to her old wine-sipping ways—somewhat risky behavior for a pregnant person.

On top of this, Maggy the Frog’s prophecy only mentioned three children for Cersei, which would be Tommen, Myrcella, and Joffrey. (Then again, she’s also mentioned having a miscarriage before Joffrey was born, and it’s not clear how that figures into Maggy’s final count.) Also, the term “the valonqar” could even apply to characters unrelated to Cersei. Could she be murdered by Sandor Clegane, the Mountain’s younger brother? Bran Stark, another little brother? Looks like we’ll just have to keep watching to find out.
