This Game of Thrones fan theory predicts how Arya will die, and we can’t handle it
Winter has finally come in Game of Thrones—and with it, the Night King and his army of the dead. The upcoming third episode of Season 8 will see our heroes facing off against this army in the Battle of Winterfell, and after the relatively calm first two episodes, it feels like no one is safe. One fan theory has even proposed the way that Arya might die.
Redditor ultra1994 recently pointed out that in the first book of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, Arya escapes sewing lessons with Septa Mordane to find Jon and watch the men practice their combat skills. Jon proceeds to tease her, and ultra1994 says the passage could foreshadow her eventual death.
"You had best run back to your room, little sister," Jon tells her, per ultra1994's transcription. "Septa Mordane will surely be lurking. The longer you hide, the sterner the penance. You’ll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers."
Now, it’s true that Arya wouldn’t be caught dead sewing anymore, but she does wield a sword named Needle. Ultra1994 even suggests that “sewing” in Jon’s comment could be interpreted as Arya fighting with Needle. In other words, this theory predicts that Arya will die in battle, her sword in hand (which is at least an appropriately badass way to go out).
This theory seems plausible, but it does leave a lot of details unspecified. And, of course, she could still survive the series unscathed (George R. R. Martin’s wife once famously said she’d leave him if he killed off Arya, after all). We’ll just have to watch the rest of Game of Thrones Season 8 to find out.
