We officially know this ‘Game of Thrones’ character is dead. *sad face*
Spoilers for Game of Thrones ahead, so if you want to stay far away from knowing what happens during Season 6, turn back now. And no, this sadly isn’t a definitive answer as to if Jon Snow is or isn’t alive — because seriously, we could debate that for days on end. But you know, he wasn’t the only character to meet his supposed death during Season 5. There were others, like a one Myrcella Baratheon.
During the season finale, “Mother’s Mercy,” Jamie and his niece (/DAUGHTER!) finally leave Dorne, on a joruney to return back to Westeros. The two have a super-sweet moment on the boat en route, where Myrcella admits to Jamie that she knows her true parentage, and I might have cried a little bit. Also, because this moment was super short lived, since no sooner had father and daughter reunited, Myrcella falls to the ground, poisoned by Ellaria. It appears as though she died in her father’s arms, because as we know with Game of Thrones, literally everyone is going to die eventually, and it’s even worse when it happens in their father’s arms.
But is she REALLY dead? In the books, Myrcella is still in fact alive at the end of A Dance With Dragons (book spoiler alert: but she’s injured). Since the show has finally caught up with the books, there’s no basis for what’s going to happen next, and her fate could go either way. George R. R. Martin is still writing The Winds of Winter, but as for the show, there’s a new Game of Thrones companion book that clearly states her fate. The answer? RIP.
Game of Thrones: The Noble Houses of Westeros, a brand new book from HBO and Running Press, explains in detail the history of the houses in the series. So yeah, this sounds like a perfect book to pick up for the holidays, because those houses are pretty darn confusing sometimes. In the pages, it explains that Myrcella “died in the arms of Jamie Lannister, who she acknowledged as her father before her death.”
Major bummer. This is also not going to be a fun conversation between Jamie and Cersei when they arrive back in Westeros.
Myrcella, it feels like we barely knew ya. At least she’s got plenty of company in Game of Thrones character heaven.
