The most popular theory about the Night King on “Game of Thrones” was just shot down

You may have heard about a ‘lil ‘ol Game of Thrones theory that suggests Bran “Three-Eyed Raven” Stark could be the Night King. It claims that he went back in time, got stuck in the past, and — through his powers and the magic of the Children of the Forest — he became the ice-cold villain. Pretty crazy, right? Right! But if you’re on-board with the theory, we’re sorry to say we have some bad news.

Game of Thrones actor Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran, basically just shot it down.

In an interview with Vulture.com, Wright acknowledged that there are definitely parallels between the two mythical characters. But that doesn’t mean they’re literally one in the same.

"I think it’s less that they’re the same person and more that they’re two of the ancient beings of Westeros," he said. "The Three-Eyed Raven has been around for God knows how long, and White Walkers have been reported since the beginning of time. As we’ve seen, they were created by the Children of the Forest, so we can’t get much more ancient than that."

Wright went on to explain that there’s a core difference between them: the Night King embodies evil, and Bran embodies good.

Even if he has been acting hella heartless lately. Remember how he treated Meera?

"Perhaps we can think of it as these are two characters with a huge amount of power, but one is a Frankenstein’s monster who is driven by nothing but hatred and violence. Then there’s Bran, who uses his powers for good," he continued, then turned to what he's like to see ahead. "I want to find out why the Night King is so obsessed with destroying mankind."

Accordingly, Wright is hoping to “find out cool stuff about both of those characters” in Game of Thrones Season 8. And we’re sure that’ll be the case because, you know, it’s the final season.

Maybe Bran isn’t the Night King (though, we’re not ruling out the possibility), but with the Great War in full swing, we’re sure that these two ancient beings will, at the very least, each play a very significant role.
