Looks like we’ll have to wait until 2018 for ‘Frozen 2’

Frozen has been a worldwide phenomenon since it was released in late 2013 (yes, going on two years ago — can you believe that?). With lasting love like that, it was kind of a no-brainer that it would get a sequel. Except, of course, that this is Disney we’re talking about. Even though they were known for straight-to-DVD sequels of their animated hits in the 90s and 00s, the company has never made a habit of releasing animated sequel in theaters. While The Rescuers and Peter Pan serve as a notable exception and there are arguments to be made for Disney’s theatrical releases in the Winnie the Pooh universe as sequels, Frozen definitely joins an elite club in Disney’s 77-year history of animated movies — and that’s big.

But big is exactly how Disney went. Frozen 2 has been confirmed, but other than the fact that it exists, not much is known about it — until now at least. Projections now predict Frozen 2 will have a 2018 release.

Record scratch.

Yes. You read that correctly. No, it wasn’t a typo. 2018. We’re still three years away from another Frozen movie, in spite of how quickly and consistently Disney has been pushing the Frozen machine since it reached mega-hit status. Waiting a few years isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. As Frozen fever wanes and Frozen fatigue sets in, we might all need a little while to warm up to the idea of returning to Arendelle. Oh, and that brings me to the other thing we know for sure about Frozen 2: We’ll be returning to Arendelle for it, according to a pretty reliable source (John Lassiter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios).

As for what the plot of the movie will be, rumors have been swirling about everything from new characters (there’s speculation that Jack Frost might join Elsa), villains (rumor has it the main villain will be a woman this time around) and plot (literally too many to pick just one to highlight). It looks like we’ll all have to cool it with the guessing games until closer to 2018 though.
